Memorial Day Observances and Procession: Monday May 29, 2017
The Memorial Day Observances in Monticello are planned jointly by the Monticello American Legion Post #260 and Monticello VFW Post #8731 for Monday May 29th. Wreath laying services and Honor Guard gun salutes will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery (VFW Honor Guard), at 10:00 a.m. at Ellison Park Memorial (VFW Honor Guard) and St. Henry’s Catholic Cemetery (American Legion Honor Guard). The ceremonies at Riverside Cemetery will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will include speaker John Pearson, wreath laying services and gun salutes by both Honor Guards, with music provided by the Monticello High School Band, directed by Brett Krohn.
At 11:45 a.m. the Honor Guards with Colors, as well as members of the VFW and American Legion will line up at West 3rd Street and Walnut Street for the Memorial Day Procession. The procession will travel west on 3rd Street ending at the American Legion on Elm Street. At the end of the procession, a wreath will be placed at the “Some Gave All” Memorial outside the American Legion; the American Legion Honor Guard will fire a gun salute and Taps will be played.
A lunch will be provided for the procession participants at the American Legion Post #260, 304 Elm Street. A free will donation for lunch will be accepted for all others.
