Description
Monticello School District Updates with Sarah Welk,
Magic Closet
The Monticello Schools counseling staff plays a vital role in supporting students, families, and educators throughout the district. They provide a wide range of services, including social, emotional, and behavioral support; individual and group counseling; crisis intervention; and academic planning through programs like 504 Plans, IEPs, and college/career preparation. Counselors and social workers serve as consistent support figures, offering assistance with attendance and truancy, referrals to external services, and coordination with outside agencies. They also collaborate with parents, guardians, and staff through meetings, consultations, and classroom presentations to address student needs. Additionally, the counseling team fosters community partnerships with organizations like United Way, Central MN Mental Health, local businesses, and mental health agencies to enhance student resources.
One unique program they oversee is the "Magic Closet," a district-wide initiative providing basic necessities to students in need. Accessible in all seven buildings and open to all 4,300 district students through staff referrals, the Magic Closet supplies essential items such as school supplies, hygiene products, clothing, winter gear, food, and gift cards. This program relies on community donations to ensure that every student has what they need to thrive in school.
